AI-Powered Tech Enables Continuous Lab Animal Monitoring

As necessity is the mother of invention, Krupic teamed up with other scientists to develop smart-Kage, a fully automated home-cage monitoring system for mice. The system includes behavioral and cognitive tests, such as a T-maze and novel object recognition, to assess hippocampus function.

The Scientist just published an article on how exciting advancements in AI-driven home-cage monitoring are revolutionizing animal behavior research. These technologies enable continuous, detailed observation of lab animals, enhancing data accuracy and promoting well-being.

Dr. Julija Krupic and her team have developed a fully automated system that integrates cognitive and behavioral assessments within the home cage environment. This approach eliminates the need for food or water restrictions, allowing mice to engage in tasks like T-maze alternation and novel object recognition naturally. Deep learning algorithms analyze behaviors, providing comprehensive insights without human intervention.
